●Tokyo Tanbarin (Tokyo Tambourine)
The company was founded around productions written and directed by Hiroko Takai.
The plays explore the melancholy in people today through ordinary conversation and creates stories that can “only be expressed through the theater” presented with a distinct directorial style.

***The company also creates productions that go beyond ordinary performance. ***

  • Simultaneous Double-bills
    ● 2001 TANGO, a play about a real-life incident that took place in Suginami was performed simultaneously in two theaters in Suginami (in Asagaya and Koenji).
    ● 2005 Kitsune no Botan (Fox’s Peony) and Hitosi Shizuka (Quiet Alone) were performed together on one stage at Ekimae Theater in Shimokitazawa. Fox’s Peony tells the story of one family’s ruin and Quiet Alone follows their home that becomes abandoned.
    ● 2006 Waltz ~ Tonari no Otoko (Waltz ~ The Man Next Door) and Tachimachizuki ~ Tonari no Onna (Late August Moon ~ The Woman Next Door) were performed at the Star Hall in Mitaka Arts and Culture Center. A large wall was constructed to divide the stage in two, and the two stories taking place in two difference apartments in the same building were performed simultaneously.

*Performances Outside the Theater
● 2005~2007 Performances in the lobby of the Suginami City Hall (performed during City Hall lunch breaks)
● 2003, 2007, 2012 Cafe performances
● 2011~2013 Osanpo (Strolling) performances performed while walking through city streets, visiting parks, shops, restaurants, and traditional Japanese homes. (Nishiogikubo, Kichijoji, Kitashinagawa) Osanpo (Strolling), a play that incorporates shopping districts and towns, provides a theater experience casually for a public that might usually feel hesitant about theater. Based on this concept, this play offers a way into theater culture.

  • Wa no wa: Widening the circle of harmony
●2015~ Nakameguro Sugekari Park Tea Room, Shinagawa Cultural Foundation Curian Tea Room (part of Shinagawa Artist Exhibition)
There seem to be a lot of people who “want to wear kimono but don’t have the opportunity”, “are interested in tea ceremony but the threshold is too high,” “want to see theater but feel hesitant about going to the theater” or are “interested but…” For those folks, we challenged ourselves to create a new type of collaboration that would fulfill the aim to give people the opportunities to see theater casually, and to attend a tea ceremony in kimono casually. We intend to continue these activities working with wa motifs beyond tea ceremony.
